Choosing Your Family-Friendly Ski Resort: The Ultimate Guide
Planning a family ski holiday can feel overwhelming because so many resorts claim to be “family-friendly.” So how do you know which one is right for you? Start by asking yourself: “What matters most to me?” Every family is different, so make sure to consider your current priorities— is snow reliability, off-slope adventures, or a short transfer at the top of your list?
Here’s our guide to eight exceptional family-friendly resorts, each excelling in the areas mentioned earlier and lots more. Find your priority, and then your perfect resort will find you.
Courchevel: High Altitude Excellence
If snow reliability is your top concern, look no further than Courchevel. Part of the massive Three Valleys ski area, Courchevel sits at a reassuringly high altitude, with slopes reaching well over 2,700 meters. This means consistent snow conditions from December through to April, giving you peace of mind when booking months in advance. The high altitude means your children can progress confidently on well-maintained slopes all season long without worrying about patchy coverage or slushy conditions.
Courchevel 1850 offers luxury and convenience, with ski-in/ski-out properties and world-class facilities. For families seeking a slightly more relaxed atmosphere and better value, Courchevel 1650 (Moriond), Les Menuires and Reberty provide excellent beginner areas and a welcoming village feel.
You can find a Rebrty chalet with childcare packages with Family Ski here.
Obergurgl: Easter Skiing Perfection
Planning a ski trip for the Easter school holidays? Well then, look no further than Obergurgl in Austria. Known as the “Diamond of the Alps,” this high-altitude resort with its very own microclimate guarantees excellent snow conditions well into April, making it perfect for families who want to ski in the Easter holidays or simply prefer milder spring weather.
The resort sits at 1,930 meters, with skiing up to 3,080 meters, ensuring fantastic snow coverage even when lower resorts are closing. The compact, car-free village is incredibly safe for children, and the slopes are wonderfully uncrowded. Spring skiing here means longer days, warmer temperatures, and often brilliant sunshine—all while maintaining proper winter snow conditions. It really is the best of both worlds.
La Plagne: Après-Ski for All Ages
Skiing is wonderful, but what happens when the lifts close? At La Plagne, the fun continues. This French resort has mastered the art of family-friendly après-ski, offering activities that genuinely appeal to children and teenagers, not just tired parents nursing a vin chaud.
La Plagne features Olympic bobsleigh runs, ice driving experiences, paragliding, snow parks, swimming pools, cinema, and countless restaurants catering to all tastes. The purpose-built villages like Plagne Centre and Belle Plagne offer convenience, while the traditional village of Plagne 1800 provides Alpine charm. With 225 kilometers of pistes and connections to Les Arcs via the Paradiski area, there’s enough skiing to keep everyone happy, and enough off-slope activities to ensure nobody gets bored.
My favourite hotel within the Paradiski area is linked here. A ski in/ski out hotel with kids club and multiple indoor and outdoor swimming pools!
La Rosière: Small Village Charm
Not every family wants a sprawling purpose-built resort. So for those seeking authentic Alpine charm in a small, intimate setting, La Rosière is absolutely magical. This traditional Savoyard village offers a genuine mountain community feel while still providing access to excellent skiing across the French-Italian border into La Thuile. My favourite part is the beautiful forest walk locally known as 'Narnia walking trail'! linking two areas that make up the resort.
The village is small enough that you’ll recognise faces by day three, yet sophisticated enough to offer quality restaurants, bars and ski schools. Children can safely explore the village, and the gentle beginner slopes are right on the doorstep. The international link to Italy adds an exciting dimension for all the family—imagine having lunch in France and afternoon hot chocolate in Italy. It’s the perfect choice for families who want connection, community, and a slower pace.
Bardonecchia: Short Flight, Long Fun
Travel time with children can be exhausting. Bardonecchia in Italy solves this by being remarkably accessible. Just 90 minutes from Turin airport and a 1 hour 45 flight time, it really is one of the easiest resorts to reach, meaning less time travelling, so more energy for the slopes.
The short transfer is a game-changer for families with young children or anyone who dreads long coach journeys through winding mountain roads. Despite its accessibility, Bardonecchia doesn’t compromise on quality. It offers 100 kilometers of varied pistes, an excellent snow record and wonderful Italian hospitality. The compact town is easy to navigate, and the restaurants serve proper Italian food at reasonable prices.
Alpe d’Huez: Fun Kid Slopes
Teaching children to ski requires patience, enthusiasm, and—most importantly—slopes designed specifically for beginners. Alpe d’Huez has perfected this with some of the best beginner and children’s facilities in the Alps.
The resort features dedicated children’s villages with themed areas, magic carpets instead of intimidating button lifts, and gentle progression slopes that build confidence quickly. The ski school has an excellent reputation, and the resort layout means children can advance from complete beginner to confident blue-run skier without ever feeling out of their depth. Beyond skiing, the resort offers toboggan runs, ice rinks, and a spectacular setting with 300 days of sunshine a year. Known as the “Island in the Sun,” Alpe d’Huez combines technical excellence in children’s ski instruction with genuine fun.
Make sure to visit Marcel's Farm. It's a specialised, farm-themed fun zone designed for children, beginners and families. Located close to the resort centre, it features gentle, entertaining, and safe obstacles including banked corners, tunnels, rollers, and easy rails.
A special note on why Club Med's Alpe d'Huez resort is built for Families.
Club Med Alpe d'Huez is a family ski paradise because everything's included and handled for you—childcare from 4 months old, ski lessons built into the price, and kids' clubs that keep children entertained all day so parents can actually ski. The resort sits at high altitude (1,860m) guaranteeing reliable snow, with a massive beginner area and gentle slopes perfect for first-timers. What really sets it apart: while kids are in expert-led programs (sorted by age from baby club to teens), parents get guilt-free slope time, then everyone reunites for included meals where kids eat what they actually like. No juggling lift tickets, lesson bookings, or meal planning—just show up, and the staff organise everything. Plus, the resort's sunny south-facing location means less cold temperatures for little ones learning to ski.
Flaine: Good Value Without Compromise
Family ski holidays are expensive, and there’s no point pretending otherwise. But Flaine proves that value for money doesn’t mean compromising on quality. This purpose-built resort offers exceptional skiing at very reasonable prices.
Part of the Grand Massif ski area, Flaine provides access to 265 kilometers of pistes and reaches altitudes of 2,500 meters, ensuring good snow reliability. The brutalist architecture might not win beauty contests, but the ski-in/ski-out convenience is unbeatable, and you’ll save considerably compared to more famous resorts. That saved money can go toward ski lessons, better equipment, or simply a longer holiday. Flaine has excellent facilities for families, including dedicated children’s areas, childcare services, and a good range of restaurants and shops—all at prices that won’t break the bank.
For a great place to stay, check out Hotel Club MMV Le Flaine by Crystal. It's hard to beat in terms of price, and it even offers childcare provision within the hotel!
Avoriaz: Car-Free Tranquillity
Your children can play outside your accommodation and explore freely so you can completely switch off and relax. That’s the magic of Avoriaz, one of the Alps’ few completely car-free resorts.
Cars are banned from the resort center; instead, horse-drawn sleighs transport luggage and guests through the snow-covered streets. The entire resort is designed for pedestrians and skiers, creating a safe, peaceful environment where children can genuinely roam freely.
Beyond the car-free appeal, Avoriaz offers serious skiing credentials. It sits at 1,800 meters with excellent snow reliability, forms part of the massive Portes du Soleil area with 600 kilometers of pistes, and has purpose-built family facilities throughout. The village’s unique architecture and traffic-free streets create an almost fairytale atmosphere. It’s skiing without stress, exploring without anxiety, and holiday-making at its most relaxed.
It also offers an amazing swimming pool for both adults and children. The rapids and outdoor hot tub make it feel like Centre Parcs, it's right in the centre of the resort, and the hot tub is actually on the ski slope. A very one-of-a-kind experience that's not to be missed.
Finding Your Perfect Match
To conclude, the “perfect” family ski resort might not exist—but the perfect resort for your family absolutely does. Consider what matters most to you. So will it be, guaranteed snow? Safe, car-free streets? Short travel time? Budget consciousness or Great children’s facilities that decide your resort.
Each resort on this list really does excel in its particular strength. Match that strength to your family’s priority, and you’re already halfway to a successful holiday. The skiing will teach itself; the memories will create themselves. Your job is simply choosing the right resort for those memories to unfold.
Happy skiing!
